A Diving History – Lauren Kohe

As part of the Instructor Development process our Instructor candidates write a brief history of their diving to date and what they would like to get out of diving in the future.

Here is Lauren’s….                                                                                      Having fun in Huia Pool

I don’t remember learning how to swim,
I’ve always been able to
Growing up in Wellington
The sea is part of you

Rivers, beaches and Marine Reserves
Play a vital part
To keep Wellington beautiful
And special in my heart

Swimming, kayaking and snorkeling
Led me to the sea
It was only a matter of time
Before SCUBA called to me

I was Open Water certified
in July 2011
My eyes were now open
To a new liquid heaven

The water was cold
A chilly 9 degrees
But I ws not deterred
Not shaking at the knees

Now free to explore
And log adventures of my own
I head to Australia
A home away from home

New creatures to uncover
Their wonders fill my mind
Wobbegongs and Sea Dragons
What a wicked find

Home again to further
My diving education
Become a PADI Scuba Instructor
That is my vocation

From Open Water and Advanced
To Rescue and Dive Master
Developing my new skills
My mind is racing faster

Drift, Deep and Boat diving
All have their special place
But Kau Bay on a night dive
Puts a smile on my face

Noctiluca, shy Sea Horse
And the graceful Eagle Ray
Leave me energetic and excited
In a peaceful kind of way

As I dive in more locations
Experiencing wonder and awe
One thing has become clear to me
Touching my very core

Natural, clean and pure
Is what an ocean ought to be
Vibrant and healthy
With no marine debris

Project AWARE offer
Hope and education
For those who are eager
To change the state of our ocean

I dream of a world
Free from rubbish in our sea
And when I’m a PADI Instructor
This will be my philosophy
Teamwork and respect
Is the vital key
