The scallop season has opened in here Wellington and we celebrated with a sneaky afternoon dive on Tuesday 15th of July
.
Leaving work early Tomo and Claire and a couple of other lucky divers met at one of our local beaches where several tasty looking scallops and been seen on earlier dives.
Heading out for our dive armed with catchbags and measurers we returned to the beach 45mins later with our quota of 20 scallops. The scallops weren’t as plentiful as expected, perhaps they had gone into hiding knowing that it was now open season. We did see lots of other life on our dive though including a baby skate only 30cm across.
All our scallops were remeasured and recounted back at the water’s edge to ensure we weren’t taking any illegal scallops. It does pay to check your local regulations before you go diving at www.fish.govt.nz or download their latest app.
We then opted to avoid the after work traffic by heading to the local for a cold drink and some hot chips before heading home to chuck our scallops for the freshest dinner available!
(NB: Some of the scallops were a little thin at this time of the year but still tasty)
We have a club dive and BBQ on this Sunday – 20th of July at 10am.
