Matiu-Somes Island 2016

Guns on Somes

The dive club braved some misty conditions as they waited for the ferry across to Matiu-Somes Island for the first trip of 2016.

Our annual underwater clean up between the wharves not only helps DoC and the environment but gives our divers a great excuse to explore a new dive site.

With a sunken barge, the wharves themselves, a large anchor, schools of moki, terakihi and kingis, stargazers, Wellington nudibranchs and masking crabs there was plenty for us to see on the dive. Fortunately there was not a huge amount of rubbish to collect – most of the bottles and cans had been there a while, some fishing line & a fishing rod, a kettle, a saucer, pieces of hose, a mask & snorkel and intriguingly a rubber chicken!

After our dive there was plenty of time to explore the island, relax and eat dinner.

Once night had fallen it was then time to grab our torches and go out hunting!
We saw several Tuatara, Tree Wetas, Cook Strait Giant Weta and Little Blue Penguins.
