Our New Mares Regulators- What’s The Go?

We have a number of new regulators from Mares available in store now! There are a number of very interesting technologies that set them apart from other regulators, providing an easy and reliable breathing experience. This allows you to not have to worry about your equipment and enjoy the wonderful sights to be seen under the water!

Recently I attended the Mares Service Technician Course to learn about the exciting new models in store. The course consisted of learning about the various models of regulators and the nuances between them. We took apart unbalanced, piston, and diaphragm regulators in a variety of models.

One of the aspects I found most intriguing was the patented Vortex Assisted Design (VAD system). This system consists of an additional tube molded into the casing of the second stage which allows the gas flow to bypass the lever system within the regulator. This creates a vortex of air leading to a ‘depression’ within the breathing chamber.

There are a number of advantages to this system, one of which is the reduced effort required to breathe. The depression of air caused by the vortex removes the feeling of the air being ‘injected’ into your mouth to create a much more pleasant breathing experience. This is particularly noticeable at depth, meaning the regulator suits a great variety of diving. Another advantage of this system is the reduced risk of free-flow in cold water. By allowing the air to bypass the lever system the likelihood of ice crystals forming on the lever and causing a free-flow is greatly reduced. For these reasons this regulator is an ideal option for our cooler waters.

In addition to the VAD system, Mares have re-released their SXS 62X model . This nifty regulator is extremely low profile. It can be used in a left or right hose orientation making it extremely versatile. The design also means that it will work in any orientation without causing any wet breathing, this makes it ideal as an option for your back up regulator

I am hugely grateful to Lachie from Mares for running me through the course. I learnt a huge amount about the Mares product line as well as many of the general principles of servicing. I have much more confidence in my ability to deal with equipment issues should they arise, and have a certification to back that knowledge up, Cam.
